Dürnstein may be the prettiest half-mile on the entire Danube. The blue-and-white abbey tower is the Wachau's signature image, and above it the ruined castle of the Kuenringers clings to the crag — the very fortress where Richard the Lionheart was held for ransom on his way home from the Crusades. Terraced vineyards climb the hills, apricot trees line the paths, and the one cobbled lane through town is an event in itself. Come for the legend; stay for the view from the ruin, which repays every step of the climb.
